Thailand has become a popular holiday destination for many due to its warm climate and affordability. Places like Phuket have become especially popular party destinations and tourist hotspots however a trip to the lesser known Krabi offers a very different experience. The UK may not be known for its snake population, but one unexpected reptile has been silently making a comeback—the Aesculapian snake. This large, non-venomous species, native to many parts of Europe and Western Asia, was once a natural resident of Britain. However, it went locally extinct around 300,000 years ago, likely due to climate changes during the Ice Age. Surprisingly, these impressive snakes have returned to the UK, not through official reintroduction efforts but due to accidental escapes from zoos.

What is the Aesculapian Snake?

The Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus) is a slender, agile climber that can grow up to 6.5 ft (2 meters) in length, making it one of the largest snake species found in Europe. Despite their size, these snakes are completely harmless to humans, relying on constriction to subdue their prey. They primarily feed on small mammals, birds, and eggs, playing an important role in maintaining local ecosystems.

How Did They Return to the UK?

While the Aesculapian snake disappeared from Britain hundreds of thousands of years ago, small populations have mysteriously re-emerged in certain areas, including London and North Wales. Their presence can be traced back to escapes from zoos and wildlife collections, where they managed to establish self-sustaining wild populations.

One of the most well-known colonies is found near Regent’s Park in London, close to the ZSL London Zoo. In this blog post, we will explore the top five largest shark species, delving into their unique characteristics, habitats, and the roles they play in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems.

The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is one of the largest shark species, with individuals reaching lengths of up to 7 meters (23 feet) and weights exceeding 1,000 kilograms (2,260 pounds). Inhabiting the cold, deep waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, these sharks are found around Greenland, Iceland, and extending as far south as the Gulf of Maine.
